Marcus and Tamara Throup

Marcus and Tamara Throup are CMS (now incorporating SAMS) mission partners serving in Brazil. They live in Joao Pessoa, in the North East of Brazil, where Marcus is on the leadership team at the Cathedral enjoying a preaching/ teaching ministry. He and Tamara also work with couples in the church – a kind of ‘marriage continuation’ course.

Marcus was born in Nottingham but has been working in the Brazilian Anglican Church since 2000. Tamara is Brazilian and is a qualified psychologist. She supports Marcus in his ministry and is also involved in children’s work at church. They have a small daughter, Rebekah, born in March 2010.

Their mission work in the North East of Brazil has varied over the past few years. Originally they worked on a social project looking after street children and in a church close to a huge city rubbish dump. After ordination, Marcus worked as a curate in two churches within the diocese of Recife, and began to teach theology in local theological colleges.

Together, Tamara and Marcus worked with both the educated middle classes and the desperately poor lower classes, giving them an insight into Brazilian society and church life.

After publishing a book on preaching in Brazil, further publishing and speaking opportunities began to arise for Marcus so in October 2009 he began studying for a part time PhD in New Testament at the University of Nottingham. He also teaches theology and was able to organise an international conference (the first of its kind) in Joao Pessoa in 2009.
