Rosemary Burke
Rosemary Burke is a CMS Mission Partner in Ethiopia. Rosemary is seconded to Tearfund to work in partnership with the local church helping to transform the lives of communities. Using her business background she supports the existing network of self-help groups; supports and develops information and communication systems particularly with donors; encourages the development of the small and medium sized businesses that have been started by group participants; host visitors and volunteers; and helps extend the network into more rural areas.
Rosemary has a degree in Metallurgy and Materials Science and an MBA. She worked in industry and commerce for over 25 years, latterly as Head of Mergers and Acquisitions for Corus plc, the Anglo-Dutch steel group. She has long had a desire to use her business skills in the Third World. This she has explored by doing a series of short-term projects: income generation with the long-term patients of the Fistula Hospital in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; building a nursery block for a primary school in Uganda with Mission Direct; and an administrative role with the Anglican Church in Ethiopia.
These roles have confirmed her interest in development work and have demonstrated how her business skills can be used in the mission of the local church. Her projects in Ethiopia have given her a desire to see lives changed and to learn more of the culture and language of the country .
