BACKGROUND INFORMATION Work on the proposal for SAMS and the Church Mission Society (CMS) to join together has been proceeding for over 18 months with the hope to enter formal union starting in early 2009.
Both Societies have taken a decision in principle. It is planned that decisions will be taken by both Societies in November 2008 with the matter then to be referred to this proposed meeting.
Under Law 26 of the Laws of the Society, “mergers or amalgamations” must be approved by two-thirds of Members present at a Special General Meeting of the Society.
Law 13 of the Society requires that Special General Meetings of members is advertised in two national daily newspapers and advertisements have been placed in The Times and the Daily Telegraph and the notice will be placed in the Church Times and Church of England Newspaper.
CMS is required to give formal notice three months in advance of such a meeting in the national press and to inform Members of the details of the proposed resolution by letter.
