Chair of Trustees
The Rt Rev Paul Butler
Paul has served as a trustee since 2001. He is passionate about local and global mission; his particular involvement has been with the mid-Africa region, but he also has links with the Lutherans in Russia, the church in the Middle East and South America. Before his appointment as Bishop of Southampton in 2004 he was for 10 years Team Rector in Walthamstow, east London. He has a particular commitment to work with children and young people and has two books published on the subject.
Ms Alexis Chapman
Alexis is a freelance consultant currently providing International Save the Children Alliance with business development consultancy services in its global fundraising project. She trained as a chartered accountant and worked for KPMG, including a major audit of the International Committee of the Red Cross. She then moved to Save the Children UK, where she was Director of Finance and Director of Marketing.
Dr David Fulford
David is a lecturer at the University of Reading and teaches on an International MSc course on renewable energy. He served as a CMS mission partner in Nepal, helping set up the national biogas programme. He has done development consultancy work in Papua New Guinea, Ethiopia, Nepal, Uganda and Sri Lanka.
The Rev Canon Philip Groves
Philip is team vicar in Melton Mowbray and a former CMS mission partner in Tanzania, where he taught at a theological college. He helped develop a small loan programme there, which has been replicated world-wide. He was made a Canon by the Diocese of Mpwapwa in recognition of his service. He is doing academic research on international partnership.
Mrs Shona Passfield
Shona has served as Trustee for 4 years and has been able to use her business background as Managing Director of her own Marketing Consultancy to engage with the work of CMS in Business as Mission (BaM). She sits on the Board of Magi - CMS's BaM initiative in Asia and also provides practical help to CMS Africa with their BaM strategy. She regularly travels to both Asia and Africa in support of the BaM work. Shona has been married to Andrew for 23 years and worships at Great St Mary's Church in her home town of Sawbridgeworth.
Mrs Paddy Payne
Paddy is Chairperson of the CMS Personnel Advisory Group and herself a former CMS mission partner in Iran, where she served with her husband and family for just over seven years until the 1979 revolution. Since then Paddy has served on many committees, ad hoc groups and working parties for CMS, especially in the areas of selection, training and mission education. She is regularly on interviewing panels for staff positions.
Mrs Katharine von Schubert
Katharine is a freelance writer and mum. She is a former CMS mission partner (she produced Arabic videos for the Middle East) and former staff member. She has spent six years living in the Middle East and has worked for major charities in advocacy and communication, including Oxfam, Christian Aid and Save the Children, and the Quakers as a volunteer international observer.
The Rev Martyn Snow
Martyn is vicar of Christ Church Pitsmoor and Area Dean of Ecclesfield in Sheffield. He is a former CMS mission partner in Guinea, where he was a youth chaplain. Alongside ‘traditional’ church in his own multicultural community, he mentors three evangelists working on ‘fresh expressions’ of church.

Dr Kang-San Tan
Kang-San is Head of Mission Studies at Redcliffe College, and was formerly OMF International’s Director of Mission Research, based in Singapore and was CMS missiologist-in-residence in 2006. His research areas include Interfaith Encounters (Islam and Buddhism) and Non-Western Christianities.
“In addition to mission leadership experience, I am keen to contribute a Non-Western perspective to CMS ministries.”
The Rev Dr Kevin Ward
Kevin is a senior lecturer in African Religious Studies at the University of Leeds and has been a CMS trustee for four years. He spent 16 years as a CMS mission partner in Uganda, where he was ordained. He has just published a comprehensive history of the Anglican communion, and is working on a history of the Ruanda Mission/Mid-Africa Ministry.

The Rev Canon Mavis Wilson
Mavis is the Rector of St Peter’s Church, Frimley, having previously led the Diocesan Mission and Parish Development Department. She taught mission on the Readers’ Course and is trained in consultancy and mediation, advising the Mennonite Centre for Mediation Services and Training.
“Pioneering women in mission inspired my call to ministry and now I want to use my experience to assist CMS to engage creatively with God’s fast changing world.”
The Rev Simon Winn
Simon is vicar of St Joseph the Worker, Northolt, a multicultural church serving Urban Priority Area outer-London estates. A community project run by and for local people and two 'Fresh Expressions' of church are part of their mission in a neighbourhood where many people are two or more generations distant from any meaningful Christian contact. “We continually seek the Holy Spirit’s guiding to creatively connect faith with everyday life here."
Simon, who was a journalist and media trainer before ordination, and has spent time studying and working in the Middle East, said: " I am inspired by CMS’s new found creativity and energy, as we play our part in a global network of Christians.”
