The psalmist is constantly encouraging us to "sing a new song to the Lord".

Singing songs from other Christian communities can enlarge our hearts and give us a new sensitivity and understanding of the lives of others.

In Every Corner Sing: Songs of God's World is a new collection of world songs, organised liturgically with gathering songs, short chants, worship and praise songs, psalm songs, songs of justice and peace, and songs to send the people of God out.

In the preface, former CMS mission partner Geoff Weaver quotes a telling aphorism: "Tell me what you sing and I'll tell you who you are."

Geoff believes that the songs we sing tell a lot about our priorities, our view of the world, and our openness (or lack of it) to what is new and different.

If we move out of our comfort zone musically, Geoff points out, "our horizons will expand and we shall be changed in the process".

"Remember," Geoff writes, "that these songs come from the heart. Apparently simple songs will often have a powerful association. 'Come now, O prince of peace', for example, is the urgent prayer of Korean Christians longing for reunification. The much-loved 'Thuma mina' from South Africa emerged as an expression of that country's people's great suffering.

"In the singing of these songs, I believe that we too can be set free in many ways -- not least from our limited vision of what it means to sing God's praises."

So, check out the riches that In Every Corner Sing: Songs of God's world has to offer and be released into a new freedom to "sing a new song to the Lord".

Commendation of In Every Corner Sing by the Archbishop of York
"Whenever communities gather, they sing together as an expression of their identity, their joys and sadnesses and their hopes for the future.

"For centuries, Christians have expressed their faith in song, but it is only in the past 50 years or so that Christians in the West have come to appreciate what a wealth of song Christians from other parts of the world have to share.

"Whether it be songs of joy and hope from South Africa, often sung in conditions of fear and uncertainty, or sung prayers for unity from Korea -- or cries for justice from Africa to Latin America, we have come to recognise the power of global song to move us to prayer, protest and praise.

"I commend this collection of songs, some new, some well-established, in the hope that the congregations and choirs who sing them will come to a deeper understanding of, and an empathy with, those Christians from whom the songs originally came."

Dr John Sentamu, Archbishop of York
