Small loans teach big lessons to Tanzanian youth
New business from small loans
Young Christians in Tanzania and their communities will continue to benefit from enterprises started with small loans, thanks to gifts from generous supporters.
Mission partner Christine Salaman, who started the small loans project three years ago, said, “The money will enable us to employ a new project officer and to run the project in one more diocese.”
Past loans of around £100 to £300 to more than 30 youth groups have helped them start small businesses like raising pigs or chickens, vegetable gardening, cafes, carpentry, tailoring and others.
The youth groups are also taught to save money so that after they pay back the loans they can keep developing their income-generating projects.
“They are also encouraged to support their local churches through tithing their profits,” said Christine, who serves as provincial youth worker for the Anglican Church of Tanzania.
