Mission partner Colin Smith continues to make great strides in helping urban churches work for lasting change in Africa’s vast slums.
This was seen clearly at the recent CMS-sponsored “Building Just Communities” conference in Nairobi.
As conference convener and head of the Centre for Urban Mission in Kibera, Colin said he had hoped for 200 participants.
More than 300 showed up.
For three days, church leaders heard and shared stories of how Centre for Urban Mission training has helped them work with others to provide healthcare, education, sanitation and income generation projects for people in their communities.
“The testimonies of churches we work with provided a powerful and much needed reminder that change is possible,” said Colin.
Colin is committed to exploring how urban church leaders can challenge and change unjust structures that keep people living in desperate circumstances. At the conference, one former student shared how he is now working on advocating for important land rights issues in his district.
Professor PLO Lumbumba, head of Kenya’s Anti-Corruption Commission, and a Christian, was the opening speaker.
This was the third and most successful conference Colin and his team have hosted.
