Homosexuality: elevating the conversation

When the news broke that Bishop Gene Robinson was speaking at the Greenbelt Festival this year, some critics even rounded on CMS just for being associated with the Festival.

Convinced that public jibing on websites was no way to conduct a sensitive debate, we put on a session in the CMS tent at Greenbelt aimed at suggesting more positive ways to frame the ongoing debate over human sexuality.

Andrew Goddard, tutor in ethics at Trinity College Bristol, describes what he set out to achieve:

"First and most fully I want to propose a framework for discussion and conversation.

"I hope and believe this will not only shed some light on why we find it hard as Christians to discuss homosexuality well but also that it might provide something most Christians – whatever their views on aspects of the homosexuality debate – can accept as some sort of common ground.

"Then, in the light of that, I want to suggest some basic principles for how we could discuss the subject in a better way than we often have done."
