Asian Mission Movements consultation - June 09

Church leaders and mission agencies will be encouraged to partner in mission in response to the growing indigenous mission movements of Asia, during the Asian Mission Consultation at Redcliffe College, Gloucester from 10 – 11 June 2009.

Booking deadline 29 May

The 24-hour consultation is aimed at mission agencies and church leaders working in Asia, or with Asians around the world, and is a key forum for networking for mission in Asia. Entitled Asian Mission Movements: Competition or Collaboration, the event is organised in partnership with CMS, OMF International, South Asian Concern and Faith2Share. Speakers include Dr Julie Ma, President of the Asian Pentecostal Society and Mark Laing, who taught missiology for nine years at Pune Theological Seminary in India.

Dr Kang-San Tan, Head of Mission Studies at Redcliffe College (and CMS Trustee) said: “Despite the rapid growth of Asian mission movements, many Western mission agencies persist with outmoded mission structures. Others are beginning to seek new models for partnership with these newer movements. For the second year, the Asian Mission Consultation seeks to provide a forum for exchanging ideas on best practices and creative models of partnership with Asian mission movements.”

The programme includes forums, plenary sessions, workshops and time for networking. The Rev Dr Warren R Beattie, OMF International’s Director of Research, who is speaking at the consultation, says churches and agencies should partner in mission in the present climate.

“If we are to facilitate the way in which mission is carried out then there is a necessity to partner with others so that ‘organisational knowledge’ and skills as well as experiences of Christian life and spirituality can be shared with others. Different groups will profit in different ways from these partnerships but the challenge remains to interact and learn with others.”

The Asian Consultation will be held at Redcliffe College, Gloucester from 5pm on Wednesday 10 June until 4pm on Thursday 11 June 2009. Cost is £50 residential, and £35 non-residential including meals. Booking deadline is 29 May 2009. To book, contact David Marriott on 01452 308 097 or email dmarriott@redcliffe.org

More information is available on the Redcliffe College site, including booking details: www.redcliffe.org/events

A Global Connections East Asia Diaspora Forum event will also be held at Redcliffe on 10 June from 10am to 4pm.
