Mount Kenya Challengers
Report – Climb Mount Kenya
05 – 15 September 2007

A year ago, six people from around the globe spent 10 days in Kenya, climbing its highest mountain and visiting CMS projects in Nairobi.

The team consisted of David Green from Tanzania, Henry Guy from Uxbridge, Kate Pearmain from Woking, Richard Turner from Nottingham, Phil Wootton from Chatham, Stephane Warwick from Gibraltar, and was accompanied by Sila Matu from CMS Africa.

The trek followed a demanding route through steep rocky faces and icy couloirs to one of its three main peaks – Point Lenana at 4985 metres. The team spent their nights under canvas, experiencing a full range of weather conditions and topography.

All of this exhilarating hard work was in aid of funding scholarships to train leaders across Africa. Christianity is growing by leaps and bounds but such rapid growth presents a huge challenge: who will disciple and lead these thousands of new believers? CMS provides scholarships for leaders across Africa to be trained as pastors, youth workers, social workers, HIV/AIDS workers, and leaders in many other vital areas of life. This is a critical time for the African church – will it continue to expand, making an impact on society, or will it falter for lack of leaders?

In taking up the Mount Kenya Sponsored Challenge, this team raised £50,000 for African scholarships which will make an awesome difference to the African church.
