Temptation and Testing began life as a series of talks that Paul Butler gave during Lent 2004.

Importantly, it proves, as Paul's daughter pointed out, that bishops are "just human like the rest of us" – if that was ever in doubt – when it comes to the issue of human frailty.

Paul acknowledges the contributions of those, including his family, who 'put up with' a man "who regularly gives in to temptation and fails the tests but who has discovered God's amazing, forgiving, renewing grace".

At the end of each chapter, there is a section containing ideas for reflection. The text also includes some suggested questions as an aid to group discussion and suggestions about pictures for use as a visual stimulus to discussion or quiet reflection. The prayers in the book can be used for individual or group worship.

The Rt Rev Paul Butler has served as a CMS trustee since 2001 and became Chair of the Trustees on 1 January 2008. He has particular involvement with the Mid-Africa region, in which CMS supports partners, mission personnel and projects, as well as strong links with the Lutherans in Russia.

Before his appointment as Bishop of Southampton in 2005, Paul was Team Rector of the Walthamstow Team Ministry in east London.

He is passionate about work with children, families and young people and is the author of two well-received books, Reaching Children and Reaching Families , on the subject of evangelism to those sections of society.
