Meet some of our speakers

CMS speakers come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences but all have at least one thing in common: a passion for mission. All CMS representatives are qualified to give a dynamic, vibrant presentation. Look below to get to know some of our speakers.

Meet Cathy Ross
Originally from New Zealand, Cathy Ross has been a mission partner in Congo, Rwanda and Uganda. Cathy was Director of the School of Global Mission at the Bible College of New Zealand from 1998 to 2005. In 2005, she and her husband Steve and their three children moved to Britain, so that Cathy could work with CMS. She is the manager of the new Crowther Centre for Mission Education at CMS in Oxford.

Cathy’s interests include exploring issues of gospel and culture, the church in Africa, mission interchange and women in mission. Her doctoral studies focused on the lives of four CMS missionary wives to New Zealand in the 19th century. Their stories were turned into a book, Women with a Mission, published by Penguin in October, 2006.

Meet Philip Bingham
As CMS mission personnel manager , Phillip Bingham is uniquely qualified for his position. After spending eight years as a mission partner in DR Congo, where he used his skills as a qualified accountant to help the Boga Diocese organise the finances of its health and development projects, Phillip became CMS regional manager for Mid-Africa. For four years, he covered CMS work in Rwanda, Burundi, DR Congo and southwest Uganda.

Though Phillip and his wife Diana and their two children live in the UK now, Phillip’s heart is still very much in Africa and he is well-suited to speaking about current issues in African mission.

Meet Joseph Steinberg
Raised in a Jewish home in the United States, Joseph Steinberg shocked his family when as a teenager, he told them he believed that Jesus was the Messiah. Ever since, life has taken him on some unexpected journeys, including moving from America to the UK, where he became ordained in the Church of England and co-authored The Y Course and its companion book, Beyond Belief .

Joseph serves as one of the directors of CMS. A gifted communicator, he has shared his story and been featured speaker on mission and evangelism at many conferences and events, including Spring Harvest, Easter People and the Oxford Inter-Collegiate Christian Union.

Meet Yemi Adedeji
Yemi Adedeji was born in Nigeria, and is the son of a Nigerian Princess. After attaining success in the commercial world, Yemi found himself eager to apply his marketing talents to a mission context. So he left his high-power job and now helps CMS build new relationships with Christians across the UK and beyond.

From a Muslim background, Yemi has an amazing testimony to share. As a former press secretary to the Nigerian Education Minister and an ordained pastor, he enjoys speaking to audiences about the love and power of Jesus. Yemi is married to Smi, who is from the UK, and they reside in Britain.

Meet Tim Dakin
Tim Dakin has been General Secretary of CMS since 2000, yet his fervour for mission began developing much earlier. Born in Tanzania, the son of mission workers, Tim was educated in Nairobi and later, when his parents moved back to the UK, in Henley upon Thames.

After ten years of studying theology at Christ Church Oxford and King’s College London, Tim returned to Nairobi and became Principal of Carlisle College in Nairobi. He and his wife Sally and their two children, Anna and Jonny, continue to visit Kenya frequently.

Tim has a keen interest in world mission and serves on the Mission and Public Affairs Council and Partnership for World Mission Panel. He is a recently appointed Member of the General Synod of the Church of England. In his limited spare time, Tim enjoys reading, films and travelling.
