Slavery Debate – ESU School's Mace

Welcome to the CMS site for the ESU first-round motion in the 2007 School’s Mace.

“This House believes the British government should apologise for the slave trade."

This year is the 200th Anniversary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade in Britain, and that’s raised some BIG issues that still need to be debated.

Britain played a huge role in the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, but has the government gone far enough by “expressing regret” rather than apologising for what happened?  And what does an apology mean anyway?  Is it just looking back?

Haven’t we learned and moved on from here?  Or does the presence of contemporary slavery show it’s still an issue with which Britain hasn’t dealt?

If you want to know the rules of debating then click here, but if you want to WIN the slavery debate, then you’re in the right place.

Once you’ve read this site you will:
  • know what the slavery debate is all about;
  • have some cracking arguments up your sleeve;
  • be able to illustrate every point with examples;
  • know exactly what the judges are looking for.
