The first round of the Mace is different because it is a pre-released motion. The best thing you can do is prepare yourself really thoroughly.

There are four key things that the judges are looking out for in this round to help your team stand out:

ONE A sound understanding of the topic. For this round you’ve had the chance to chat about it and read up. Download our pdf file with historical time line and real stories

TWO The ability to bring in examples. That doesn’t mean use personal stories, but perhaps bigger figures (how many people were sold in the slave trade? or how much money did Britain make from it?).

THREE Details are key. If you just say “Britain benefited from the slave trade” then you’re unlikely to get credit. If you can list the industries that grew up from the slave trade, or the cities that only exist because of slavery wealth that will get you more credit.

FOUR How to use these case studies :
  • Read them to give you an idea of the current situation in slavery in our pdf file.
  • Weave examples and details into your points. An example or a case study is not a point in itself. Make your argument and then prove it by some real world information / a statistic / a historical fact. Link back at the end of this information and really spell out how it proves the point you are making.
