Setting up the debate
It’s important you understand the status quo. This debate is about a change in government policy – they should apologise for the slave trade, so here’s what you need to know.
What has the government said about the slave trade? Here’s the PM’s response – is that enough/not enough? How is it different from an apology?
Who has apologised?
Why is it still such an issue? See the UK government’s website
When has there been an apology or pressure for an apology about other issues - what is the precedent? (Nazi Germany, the holocaust, the Armenian Genocide of Turkey, the British government over the Irish Potato Famine). Think carefully how to use these precedents for either side; is the slave trade something on an equivalent scale? Does it matter that these events are still in living memory? Has an apology helped people move on or created more resentment? In the Armenian case, what impact has the withholding of an apology had?
