Christine and Paul Salaman
Christine, Paul, Daniel and Isaac Salaman are mission partners in Tanzania, based at St John's University in Dodoma.
Paul and Christine spent three years working in Tanzania as a science teacher and as a development worker from 2000 to 2003 and have been living and working in St Austell, Cornwall since their return.
Paul will be working for the Anglican Church of Tanzania as a lecturer in science and education at St John’s University, a new institution which the church are opening in Dodoma in September.
Education is vital for development in Tanzania, and university education is in great demand as there are just 19 universities catering for a population of 35 million.
St John’s has strong Christian values, and focuses on theological education as well as courses such as education and science to train and equip future leaders from the local community.
Archbishop Donald Mtetemela says “starting a university is a crucial enterprise to the future of our nation and our people. It is a historic initiative by our church for the benefit of all Tanzanians regardless of race, colour, tribe, gender, religious or political affiliation”.
After spending some time settling the boys, Christine hopes to get involved with community development work through the church.
We see these roles as part of our holistic mission to Tanzania to which God has called us, working in partnership with the church of Tanzania to improve the lives of Tanzanian people. Through this work and our lives we can share God’s love with His people, as well as sharing His word through our work in the local church.
We anticipate being actively involved in the local church as we were in our first term of service in Tanzania. Christine, a musician, was involved with a local choir and their evangelistic projects, whilst Paul preached regularly in the local church.
These are roles we would see ourselves taking on again.
